The Nature Conservancy Photo Contest Winner

Categories: Announcements

I’m happy to announce I was one of the winners of this years Nature Conservancy Photo Contest! As a result I am being published in their 2021 calendar. My photo of Zion’s Kolob area is featured as the month of March. This is pretty exciting for me because it was a national contest

The photo is of a freak snowstorm in May, clearing up over the Kolob area of Zion National Park. It had been raining all night and I knew conditions were likely going to be very interesting the following morning. I had been heading towards the main canyon of Zion when I got a call from a friend that he thought there might be snow up in the Kolob corner of the park and he was heading that way. I impulsively made a U-turn and headed over to meet him

The decision (and invitation) really paid off. I arrived just as the snow was tapering off. The Kolob was lush with bright green spring leaves, and the snow had fallen heavily on the spruce trees just above that level. Dramatic clouds were shifting every minute, making for a great show that made me hesitate to get back in my car to head to another viewpoint.

I submitted a handful of photos to the contest but it was this particular picture that won the contest. So, I’ve decided to post some of the other images I captured from that day. Enjoy.
