Conveyor of Mountains

These dark stripes, the lateral moraines are rubble stripped from the mountains. The rubble is thick, on the surface several dump trucks of thickness, and they usually continue well below the surface. They stretch all the way down the glacier, 35 miles from this point. All of that rock has been removed from the mountains. It's a detailed logbook of erosion. It's all right there, neatly organized, easily measured, and it's a huge sum.

Storm Over Eagle Lake

The clouds part after a freezing rain (and snow) over Eagle Lake in the Chugach Mountains of Alaska. The sleet and hail had been so bad Fisher and i sought shelter in a ruin.

Edge of Tundra

A glacial stream flows from the edge of a smooth ice cap retreating up a freshly exposed, rugged canyon. On the left are tundra fields, on the right virtually nothing grows.

The primitive forms of the arctic landscape make one feel that they have travelled far back to the time before man.

Lower Williwaw Lakes

I've been to Williwaw Lakes numerous times and the water level can vary dramatically. One summer they were almost dry.

Prehistoric Hidden Valley

This valley is halfway up the 50 mile long Nabesna Glacier but is somehow ice free for a few miles. That makes it one of the most remote valleys in North America. If you can walk here from the road, then you are in shape to go anywhere on the planet.

Carpathian Peak Panorama

The highest, most iconic mountain of the region. Blackstone Bay and Prince William Sound lie on the other side. There are many shots of Carpathian Peak from this angle, but they are all taken from the road. This one is not.

Blackstone Bay

After spending 6 hours hiking to and climbing up the Burns Glacier, the view of Blackstone Bay, after crossing the pass, was breathtaking. Very few people have ever seen it in summer.

Insignificance Bestowed

It's impossible to describe the immense size of Denali. It's taller then Mt. Everest from bottom to top and also one of the most massive mountains on Earth. The foothills you see here would be regular sized mountains in most places on the continent.

Matanuska Panorama

The upper reaches of the Matanuska River meets the Matanuska Glacier. They can be thought of as different forks that meet to create the main river. Very nice fall day and fantastic view. The lowland forests on the right are possibly growing on old abandoned parts of the glacier buried under soil and rock.
