The Harding Icefields

The Harding Icefields are one of the most amazing places i've ever been. It's a relentless gruelling hike to get up there but when you finally come over the last hill and see that vista, you feel like have walked right into Antarctica or Greenland. This image is not even the main icefields but a small area where the Exit Glacier begins it's decent. To the right, the icefields continue for 40 miles.

The River More Ancient than Epochs

Another one of my favorite views, of all the places i've been. The Green River, far older than the Colorado or any of these Canyons, meanders through a perfect set of curves in a vast desolate landscape called Canyonlands. Beyond the canyons the Henry Mountains remind me of where i spent so many afternoons escaping the heat of the desert and exploring old mines.

Double Reflection Rainbow

A rare event. The centres of reflection bows are at the same altitude as the sun - the anthelic point. This is the same distance above the horizon as the centres of normal bows are below it at the antisolar point. The normal bow and its corresponding reflection bow intersect at the horizon. Reflection bows are usually brightest when the sun is low because then its light is reflected most strongly from water surfaces. The normal and reflection bows draw closer together as the sun gets lower. The source of the reflected light is usually water behind you, i.e. sunwards. It can be in front of you but then only the base of the reflected bow will be seen.

Conveyor of Mountains

These dark stripes, the lateral moraines are rubble stripped from the mountains. The rubble is thick, on the surface several dump trucks of thickness, and they usually continue well below the surface. They stretch all the way down the glacier, 35 miles from this point. All of that rock has been removed from the mountains. It's a detailed logbook of erosion. It's all right there, neatly organized, easily measured, and it's a huge sum.

Nabesna Mid Glacial Lake

This lake is a new phenomenon that was only 2 summers old by the time i came across it. I think what is happening is that the downward side of the lake is a small ridge and the glacier has lost enough mass that it can no longer ride over the top of it, halting it's forward movement. But, there could also be an ice dam somewhere in the area.
