Spencer Glacier

Winter offers the opportunity to walk or ride across Spencer Lake and visit the glacier up close. We endured an hours long blizzard to get here but it paid off when the storm magically disappeared.

Northwestern Glacier (from below)

The size of glaciers can be very hard to get across in a photo. I hope the spruce trees here that are far closer than the ice give an idea of scale.

Granite Terraces

High up in the Talkeetna Mountains above Snowbird Glacier recent melting has divided the glacier into separate pieces and exposed terraced steps of granite. These "new" areas of land are extremely unstable as rocks and boulders have been very gently placed on top of each other from slowly melting ice. You must always be prepared for your footing to collapse or shift.

Glacier Study 18

I've lost track of these numbers. A stream emerges from an ice cave barely visible behind rubble on the far right. The rocks glisten in the rain.

Icicles

A lot of Alaskan streams are frozen under several feet of ice in winter but there are usually areas where the water never freezes. Once winter i wanted to see if i could get pictures from down in these holes and even in the tunnels.

Snow and ice patterns from sun, rain, wind, and radiative heating from the rocks on the ice. In this case it reminds me of an electron microscope scan.

Mortal Moulin

I was shocked at the size of this gargantuan moulin at the top of the Snowbird Glacier. It had two waterfalls pouring into it and i could not see the bottom. A bad sign for an already dying Glacier.

The Harding Icefields

The Harding Icefields are one of the most amazing places i've ever been. It's a relentless gruelling hike to get up there but when you finally come over the last hill and see that vista, you feel like have walked right into Antarctica or Greenland. This image is not even the main icefields but a small area where the Exit Glacier begins it's decent. To the right, the icefields continue for 40 miles.

Conveyor of Mountains

These dark stripes, the lateral moraines are rubble stripped from the mountains. The rubble is thick, on the surface several dump trucks of thickness, and they usually continue well below the surface. They stretch all the way down the glacier, 35 miles from this point. All of that rock has been removed from the mountains. It's a detailed logbook of erosion. It's all right there, neatly organized, easily measured, and it's a huge sum.

1

Nabesna Mid Glacial Lake

This lake is a new phenomenon that was only 2 summers old by the time i came across it. I think what is happening is that the downward side of the lake is a small ridge and the glacier has lost enough mass that it can no longer ride over the top of it, halting it's forward movement. But, there could also be an ice dam somewhere in the area.
