Looking Back

Due to a miscommunication during my talk with the backpackers i had aimed for the wrong notch. We came in at the low saddle along the ridge towards the right. The ridge climb wore me out so i wasn't happy about having to climb over three more knobs or rock. We did finally come back to the trail and i could see that it does indeed exist and goes down into the valley. As i thought, it goes down much too steeply and much too early.

The local chapter of the Brotherhood first met here in August 1899. (Step across the street, and you'll notice the letters "A.B." and the "1899" above the door, and "Camp Skagway No. 1" on the overhang. The organization's symbol, a gold pan and nuggets, is up near the roof line. The facade, which dates from 1900, has been called a prime example of Victorian Rustic Architecture. Charley Walker and his fellow lodge members collected over 8,800 driftwood sticks on the shores of Skagway Bay and nailed them to the front wall.

Double Reflection Rainbow

A rare event. The centres of reflection bows are at the same altitude as the sun - the anthelic point. This is the same distance above the horizon as the centres of normal bows are below it at the antisolar point. The normal bow and its corresponding reflection bow intersect at the horizon. Reflection bows are usually brightest when the sun is low because then its light is reflected most strongly from water surfaces. The normal and reflection bows draw closer together as the sun gets lower. The source of the reflected light is usually water behind you, i.e. sunwards. It can be in front of you but then only the base of the reflected bow will be seen.

Conveyor of Mountains

These dark stripes, the lateral moraines are rubble stripped from the mountains. The rubble is thick, on the surface several dump trucks of thickness, and they usually continue well below the surface. They stretch all the way down the glacier, 35 miles from this point. All of that rock has been removed from the mountains. It's a detailed logbook of erosion. It's all right there, neatly organized, easily measured, and it's a huge sum.
